3D Printing: Multiple Technologies, Very Different Results
When we talk about 3D printing, we often imagine a single machine. In reality, there are several distinct technologies, each with its own operating principles, materials, and results. Here's an overview of the main approaches encountered today.
1. Fused Deposition Modeling — FDM
FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) is the most common technology. A nozzle heats a plastic filament — PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU… — and deposits it layer by layer to build the object from bottom to top. It's a robust, versatile method, compatible with a wide variety of materials and colors.
- Result: Solid and functional parts, with visible layer lines on the surfaces.
- Ideal for: Everyday objects, decoration, technical parts, customization.
2. Stereolithography — SLA
SLA (Stereolithography) uses an ultraviolet laser to solidify a photosensitive liquid resin, layer by layer. The result is remarkably fine: surfaces are almost smooth and details are very precise.
- Result: Smooth surfaces, fine details, almost professional appearance.
- Ideal for: Jewelry, figurines, high-precision prototypes.
- Constraint: Parts require post-processing (washing, UV exposure) and resins can be fragile.
3. Digital Light Processing — DLP
Very similar to SLA, DLP (Digital Light Processing) uses a digital projector to solidify an entire layer of resin in a single exposure, rather than point by point. This makes it faster for certain parts, with a very high level of detail as well.
- Result: Smooth surfaces, high resolution, fast printing.
- Ideal for: Dentistry, jewelry, rapid prototyping of small parts.
4. Selective Laser Sintering — SLS
SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) uses a laser to fuse powders — typically nylon or polyamide — layer by layer. Unlike FDM, no supports are needed because the unsintered powder supports the part during printing. This allows for very complex geometries.
- Result: Robust parts, complex shapes, slightly grainy surface.
- Ideal for: Complex functional parts, small series, advanced prototypes.
